Designing Signs: Beauty, Balance and Brand

What Is the Best Sign Material for Your Outdoor Marketing Campaign?

The objective of any marketing campaign should be to spread the word as much as possible about your business for the lowest cost. This is, of course, a very simplistic view as other factors have to be taken into account and if you're thinking about branching out into signs specifically, then you need to make sure that you make them from the right material. There are so many different types of material available that it can make your head spin, but you need to narrow everything down first of all by determining where you're going to place your promotional message. How do you get this process going?

Fielding Your Campaign

Firstly, there are two sides to any outdoor marketing campaign – the message and the vehicle. Assuming that you have carefully determined how you are going to portray that message in words, colours, graphics and images, then you need to choose the right platform.

Unsuitable Choices

You can immediately discount some of the favoured options, as they are simply not meant for outdoor use and are not durable. Thus, ultra and "gator" board (while exceptionally good materials for indoor signage) cannot be candidates.

Outdoor Candidates

From a budget point of view, your entry point is set with the "coroplast" product, which is based on plastic sheeting and has a low gloss finish. These are ultralightweight and relatively durable but tend to fade and may show their age if your outdoor campaign is going to be lengthy. In addition, these products can warp under pressure if sitting in direct sun.

At the top end of the range would be a product that is based on aluminium sheeting. This is relatively lightweight, but comes with a metallic sheen and much will depend on where you plan to situate your sign, as you may get an unwanted reflection which could mask the message that you're trying to portray.

Most Popular Choice

Most people choose the middle ground and select signs that are made from polycarb. They're generally felt to be the perfect material when outdoor signs are being placed for the long haul. You're able to print any colour on them and the finish is generally a low gloss matte. Polycarb signs are going to put up with the worst that the Australian climate can throw at them and will withstand warping or bending.

Is Polycarb Best for You?

Have a word with your printer and ask them about polycarb signs to see if they're the ideal choice in your case.
